Antonio's Behavior towards Shylock
In act 1 in the Merchant of Venice we are introduced to the major characters. There are two that have a peculiar relationship, Antonio and Shylock. Shylock is a money loaner, and he loans with interest, Antonio is not a money loaner but will loan people money with no interest which takes Shylocks business away. This is part of the reason why Shylock does not like Antonio, but the reason why Antonio does not like Shylock is simple. Antonio does not like Shylock because he is Jewish. Anti-Semitism is very common in this play. It was also very common throughout most of Europe during the time that the play was written. It is very normal for people to be Anti-Semitic at the time and that is why I think Antonio behaves the way he does towards Shylock. After all people aren't born racist, they are taught to be.
