Most Interesting Character in "A Good Man is Hard to Find"

[The most interesting character in the story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is Misfit. The way he talks, specifically with the grandmother makes him seem sane and capable of communicating.] Here is an example "'I know you're a good man. You don't look a bit like you have common blood. I know you must come from nice people.' 'Yes mam,' he said, 'finest people in the world.' When he smiled he showed a row of strong white teeth. 'God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy's heart was pure gold.'" This is just one of the many conversations he has with the grandmother, and in it he shows he recognizes his parents were good people. Yet, in the story he is portrayed as an insane murderer, which is proved in the story when he commands his two friends to go and kill the family and then he kills the grandmother. The end of the story when he kills the grandmother is very interesting. "'Why you're one of my babies, you're one of my own children!' She reached out and touched him on the shoulder. The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest." Is the Misfit really her child? That alone would make him the most interesting character, but he stands out even more with everything else going on with him. That is why I believe the Misfit is the most interesting character in the story.

What have I enjoyed about the interview process of the Oral History Project

I enjoyed the interview process of our Oral History Project more than I thought I would have. At no time during the interview was I bored. Dr. Neealapu's story was very fascinating and inspiring. During the interview I was in charge of my groups audio and video, so I was able to give my full attention to Dr. Neelapu when I wasn't checking to make sure it was still recording. Dr. Neelapu's answers to the questions we wrote were very professional, I thought it was very cool that a medical professional was giving us his time and answering our questions honestly.

The interview portion of the process was definitely my favorite part, but I also really enjoyed working on transcripting the interview onto a doc. Hearing the interview over again helped me notice things that I didn't during the interview. It wasn't extremely difficult and I found myself pretty good at sitting down and focusing on making sure my part got done. I also really appreciated that for the most part my group did a great job at getting done all the work we needed to get done. Overall, I really enjoyed the interview process, especially the actual interview.

Why did Marjane's grandmother yell at her?

The reason behind Marjane's grandmother yelling at her is very simple and justified. On pages 285-286 Marjane sees guardians of the revolution coming for a raid and realizes she is breaking their rules by wearing makeup. She doesn't want to get in trouble so she finds an innocent man on the street and tells the guardians of the revolution that he was being indecent to her. They take that man away and probably hurt him badly, but Marjane is safe and goes along with her life. She tells her grandmother about this thinking what she did was hilarious and her grandmother becomes furious because Marjane's uncle and grandfather fought to defend innocent people and gave their lives for it. It is obvious that it is certainly justified for anyone, especially her grandmother to be upset with her because what she did was cowardly and horrible. Luckily she realizes that what she did was bad and she promised herself she would never do anything to make her grandmother yell at her again.

Why did Marjane's parents send her to Europe? - Persepolis

Marjane's parents sent her to Europe for many reasons, I think they made the right decision. I believe the main reason they sent her to Austria was because she could still leave and continue her education. Their home was not a place where someone could learn and thrive, since they were constantly under fear of and being bombed. Her parents wanted to get her away from this, so they made the hard decision to send her to Austria, where she could attend a French school. Although Marjane's didn't always make the smartest decisions, she obviously turned out to be very successful. This might have not happened if her parents did not make the decision to get her out of Iran. It was very difficult for her at first, but I think she eventually started to feel more confortable towards the end of our reading.

Favorite and Leasst Favorite Book

My favorite book would have to be The Odyssey. I found this book very interesting because of the many developed characters that we got to know over the book. There were too many to count, and some of them were not introduced very well, but most of them were. I also enjoy reading about mythology, especially Greek. My least favorite book would be The Great Gatsby. I did not dislike this book, it was just my least favorite out of the ones we read. The writing was not always easy to understand and the main plot did not interest me that much.

Gatsby 5

Jay Gatsby ruined whatever chances he might have had with Daisy by forcing her to do what he said. They could have run off together and live their lives somewhere else, but Gatsby needed her to tell Nick that she never loved him. He needed things to be like what they were 5 years ago, but that was impossible to do. He claimed that he did everything for her, he bought this nice house, nice clothes and everything else for her. He wanted to live with her in that house and that was the way it had to be.  His high expectations of her caused her to drift apart from him. He was his own downfall.

Gatsby 4

Jay Gatsby the main character and the Protagonist of The Great Gatsby changes a lot over the book. The changes to him are caused by the people around him and the conflicts related between each other. Gatsby who is hopeful at the beginning of the story wishes to repeat something that happened 5 years ago. To do this he must get back together with Daisy, who is his lover, but Daisy married another man. She wants to run away with him and be free, but Gatsby wants her to tell her husband that she doesn't and has never loved him. Doing this he asks too much of her, which ends up ruining their relationship. "I wouldn't' ask too much of her," I ventured. "You can't repeat the past." This is Nick telling Gatsby that he is asking too much of her and that things can't be exactly th same as they were 5 years ago. Gatsby starts to become impatient with Daisy, but still continues to believe that she will leave Tom and things will be exactly the same again. This does not happen and Gatsby actions lead to him being killed.

Gatsby 3

The climax of The Great Gatsby is in chapter 7 when they all go to New York City. They go to the Plaza hotel and Tom senses that Daisy and Gatsby have a thing for each other. He confronts him about it and tells everyone that Gatsby runs a bootlegging business. Gatsby claims that him and Daisy are in love, but Daisy is not reciprocating the feelings. Gatsby's dream is dying and we realize that he will not end up with Daisy, but Gatsby does not give up. On the way back Daisy hits and kills Myrtle, and Gatsby takes the blame for it to show his love for her. The central conflict is resolved when Daisy does not show interest in Gatsby, showing us that everything he worked for is now gone.

Gatsby 2

From chapter 5 we really got to know that Gatsby is a nervous wreck when it comes to Daisy. At least he was before they met at Nick's house for tea. When they become comfortable with each other you really get to see how things probably were before. We learn from Nick's point of view that Daisy will not live up to Gatsby's expectations of her. We also learn that Gatsby will do a lot just to be with Daisy. As well as he is not afraid to boast his expensive clothing and belongings. We got to know a lot more about Gatsby than Daisy this chapter.

Gatsby 1

Q:
In the first two pages of the novel, Nick Carraway claims that he is "inclined to reserve all judgment." Do you find that this is true so far? Please provide textual evidence to support your position.

A:
In the book we meet our narrator, whose name is Nick Carraway. On the first page he tells us that "I'm inclined to reserve all judgements" but he does not keep this statement true. Only one page later, Caarraway says this when addressing Gatsby: "Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." Carraway tells us that Gatsby was a visual representation for Carraway about everything he deeply hates. This is a judgement because Carraway judges Gatsby's character. A couple pages later Carraway has another judgement, not of a person, but of a place. He says: "It was a matter of chance that I should have rented a house in one of the strangest communities in North America." This isn't necessarily about a specific person, but he does judge his entire community. He judges his community when he calls them one of the strangest in North America.

Henry V

The play I am reading is Henry V. Henry V is one of Shakespeare's historic plays. A major link you can see to all of Shakespeare's histories is that the majority of them are based around English Monarchs. Henry V is about an English King who waged war with the French. You can already see a similarity between the characteristics of a history and Henry V. Histories have also been known to convey civil wars or problems. This is shown when King Henry V is betrayed by fellow noblemen.

My Project - The Merchant of Venice

For my response project to the Merchant of Venice I wrote about how Antonio's ships affected the plot. I thought that my project was successful in different ways. I thought my topic was great and something I could dive deep into, and I didn't dive that deep. My presentation was alright, but not as good as it could have been. If I could change something about my process it would be to go more in depth in the reading and find more examples. I would do this project again, I enjoy writing essays, depending on the topic. I also enjoyed creating a power point presentation and I will do that again next year.

Who was the most influential character?

In The Merchant of Venice there were many characters that played huge roles or had very important lines in the play. But, who was the most influential character in the play. By influential I mean the character that had the biggest effect on the other characters lives. There are a couple clear choices, like Portia, Antonio or Shylock. These three characters all had moments where they were very compassionate and influenced the play very heavily. For Portia it was her mercy or justice speech when she disguised herself as a lawyer in Antonio and Shylock's trial. For Shylock it was his speech asking why he was treated differently because he was Jewish. And for Antonio it was his letter to Bassanio asking for him to come visit him before he goes to trial with Shylock. Given these three examples, the most influential moment that these characters had was Portia when she gave her mercy or justice speech.

Did Shylock deserve the punishment he received - Merchant of Venice

For the most part Shylock did deserve a punishment, after all he was trying to kill someone. I don't believe he entirely deserved the punishment he received. Making someone change their religion is way too extreme, it is asking someone to change the way they lived for their entire life. Also taking all of someone's money away that they've worked their entire life to get could be extreme, but he did try to kill someone. Antonio wasn't completely innocent either though, he deserved to be punished as well because of the way he's been treating Shylock his entire life. The majority of an Elizebathan audience would have thought he deserved the punishment, whether it is because they actually thought that or because he was Jewish I don't know. After all people were very Anti-Semitic in Europe back when this was written.

Shylock's Speech - Merchant of Venice

Until Act 3 in "The Merchant of Venice" the character Shylock does not express much emotion besides for his money. What happens in Act 3 is a speech that Shylock gives and it touches base on the anti-semitism in the play. In the speech he goes on about how is a Jew different than anyone else, wee both have ears, eyes, legs and so on. The reason he gives this speech is because he has been treated horribly throughout the entire play just because he is Jewish. He has finally had enough and asks why he is treated differently just because he has a different life style than other people. Shakespeare probably put this in his play to add more depth to one of his characters. He may not agree with what he wrote for Shylock, but it does definitely make Shylock a much more relatable person.

Antonio's Behavior towards Shylock

In act 1 in the Merchant of Venice we are introduced to the major characters. There are two that have a peculiar relationship, Antonio and Shylock. Shylock is a money loaner, and he loans with interest, Antonio is not a money loaner but will loan people money with no interest which takes Shylocks business away. This is part of the reason why Shylock does not like Antonio, but the reason why Antonio does not like Shylock is simple. Antonio does not like Shylock because he is Jewish. Anti-Semitism is very common in this play. It was also very common throughout most of Europe during the time that the play was written. It is very normal for people to be Anti-Semitic at the time and that is why I think Antonio behaves the way he does towards Shylock. After all people aren't born racist, they are taught to be.
