Most Interesting Character in "A Good Man is Hard to Find"
[The most interesting character in the story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is Misfit. The way he talks, specifically with the grandmother makes him seem sane and capable of communicating.] Here is an example "'I know you're a good man. You don't look a bit like you have common blood. I know you must come from nice people.' 'Yes mam,' he said, 'finest people in the world.' When he smiled he showed a row of strong white teeth. 'God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy's heart was pure gold.'" This is just one of the many conversations he has with the grandmother, and in it he shows he recognizes his parents were good people. Yet, in the story he is portrayed as an insane murderer, which is proved in the story when he commands his two friends to go and kill the family and then he kills the grandmother. The end of the story when he kills the grandmother is very interesting. "'Why you're one of my babies, you're one of my own children!' She reached out and touched him on the shoulder. The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest." Is the Misfit really her child? That alone would make him the most interesting character, but he stands out even more with everything else going on with him. That is why I believe the Misfit is the most interesting character in the story.

you make good a good point i never thought of it that way bu i think your proof all leads back to the grandmothers interesting character and i think you are overlooking that.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but I think the Misfit is truly insane.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Misfit may have a small mental illness, but nothing major. Other than that I agree with what you said.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more, the misfit is a very interesting twist on the insane murderer character trope that we see in all types of fiction
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elliott. I feel that he is very humble in some ways, but he has some mental issues. When Misfit is talking to the grandmother, he seems very calm about the fact that his men are killing her family in the woods, and he is planning on killing her. Francesco pointed out (in his blog) how the grandmother is a very interesting character and while I do think she is, I feel that Misfit just has so much room for interpretation that he is automatically made the most interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of what you mentioned, the way that the Misfit was thought of changes throughout the story which made him someone that I payed attention to a lot. The question you brought up at the end is also something that I payed attention to, I should point out that the grandma is also a very interesting character because of the way she dealt with the question you asked.
ReplyDeleteI too did a post on the Misfit and I think that he did have remorse after he killed the grandma, but only the grandma. I feel like if their conversation didnt happen, he wouldnt have lost a night of sleep after killing her.
